Written by on May 19, 2019

Model 3 of Tesla involved in a fatal crash in Florida March 1, with a semitrailer, as it was operating on the company’s semi-autonomous Autopilot system, the federal investigators have determined.

The driver was killed, as the car drove beneath the trailer, and incident of crash resembles to one that happened on other side of Florida in year 2016, that was also the case of Autopilot.

For the trailers, neither the driver nor the “Autopilot system” stopped in both cases, but car roofs were damaged.

On the March 1 crash, in a preliminary report the NTSB said that the initial data and video taken from the Tesla show, that the driver turned on Autopilot about the10 seconds before crash, on a very divided highway along with the turn lanes in median. Just before the time of the crash, in less than eight seconds, until hands of the driver were not detected on steering wheel, reported by the NTSB.

“Their system cannot literally see the broad side of an 18-wheeler on the highway,” Friedman is now vice president of advocacy for Consumer Reports, and he was acting head of NHTSA in 2014, said.

“Tesla has for too long been using human drivers as guinea pigs. This is tragically what happens,” he said.
