Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos Now Fifth Richest In The World

Written by on July 23, 2015

The unexpected second quarter profits from online retail giant Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) have pushed Amazon’s stock prices up and made its founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, more wealthy than before.

Mr. Bezos’ wealth now surpasses that of Oracle founder and flamboyant billionaire Larry Ellison’s as Mr. Bezos takes up the fifth spot in the ‘world’s richest person‘ stakes.

The leader of the pack remains the one-time tech mogul and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Mr. Gates’ wealth is estimated at $85 billion and this wealth comprises not only his stake in Microsoft but also 30 other companies. Mr. Gates is of course committed to giving his wealth away to society within his lifetime and he is focused mostly on his philanthropic endeavor although he is giving more time to Microsoft too since the appointment of Satya Nadella as the CEO of Microsoft.

Mr. Nadella had wanted Mr. Gates to take a more active interest in the affairs of the company Mr. Gates founded.

Amancio Ortega, Warrent Buffett, and Carlos Slim Helu occupy the next three positions. Then comes Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.

The next few spots on the rich list are occupied by the Koch Brothers, Mr. Ellison, and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

While Mr. Bezos’ Amazon recently celebrated 20 years of being in existence, Facebook is far younger than that, and is a ‘social media’ company that was started by a bunch of Harvard classmates including Mr. Zuckerberg. That it has grown so big, the largest social media network in the world, and its founder is now in the Top 10 of the Richest Persons In The World list, is a testament to the internet-addicted society we live in.

Google’s founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page are not far behind on the rich list.

Which goes to show how much of the wealth in the world today is being created by the new economy and entrepreneurs who had great ideas and innovated to create opportunities and wealth for people at large and themselves. Not only the founders, but also the employees and investors in these stocks have made money.

It’s surely striking that when talking of the Richest Persons In The World, so many people involved in technology make the cut. Brin, Bezos, Ellison, Gates, Page, Zuckerberg — the only people missing from this list of tech billionaires are anyone from Apple.
